Chungo Creek Outfitters is a family owned/operated hunting/fishing and trail ride operation located NW of the town of Nordegg Alberta. Nestled against the eastern boundary of Jasper National Park this is home to excellent populations of Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep, Moose, Elk, Mule/Whitetail Deer, Wolves, Bears and other mammals. The fishing (trout) is fantastic as well. The scenery in this area is unsurpassed any where in the world.

At Chungo Creek we have a base camp complete with horse handling facilities and cabins that we rent out. Hourly horseback rides are conducted throughout the summer and cabins are used by hunters, hikers, fishermen, snowmobilers, cross-country skiers, snowshoers and folk just interested in quiet and relaxing times.

During the summer we conduct high country pack trips. Most of our trips are into and or near an area known as the Blackstone /Wapiabi Forest Land Use Zone. This is a vast area (160 sq. miles) that is designated as off limits to motorized vehicles. This provides an excellent opportunity for people to truly experience horses, pack strings and nature in all its splendor. These camps are set in strategic locations to provide access to various interesting and scenic areas.

The tent camps are very comfortable and come complete with foam mattresses, cots, wood stoves, excellent food, showers etc. For those that are not interested in the hunting aspect of our operation we conduct trail rides at different times than the hunts (trail rides during the summer and hunts during the fall.) Trail rides can be booked during the fall upon request subject to the availability of guides.

Chungo Creek is prepared to tailor make the hunt or trail ride that you are interested in to meet your needs. Trail rides can usually be booked for almost any number of days and beginning or ending on days of your choice.

Other activities (besides horseback riding) may include hiking, fishing, rock climbing, photo shoots, wildlife viewing, sunbathing, swimming, relaxing .

For your comfort you should come with top quality clothing and sleeping bags. For summer trail rides you should come with hiking/packer boot , jeans, shirts, sweaters, rain gea, gloves, neckerchief, hat and jacket. At least one layer of wind proofing is also advised.

For the fall hunts you need the above mentioned items but you should also include a suit of wool based garments that breathe perspiration away from your skin and dry quickly when wet. In all hunts the meat, cape and antlers/ horns will be transported to the base camp and prepared for shipment to your home /taxidermist The following are some of the hunts that we provide and a brief description of what to expect.

+BIG HORN SHEEP

This is done from main and spike tent camps located in zone 434. The sheep population is currently very good and you can expect to see sheep every day. In the last several years clients have had 100% opportunity on legal rams. Our kill rate currently stands at 80 %. 4/5 curl rams are generally considered legal size. The 15-day hunts are conducted from horseback to get from camp to feeding/bedding areas quickly. It is not unusual to see several rams together and when a ram that is huntable presents itself you will most likely proceed on foot.

It is a good idea to be in the best physical condition possible. The hunt and the weather can sometimes be demanding. There have been several instances where the hunter has not had to walk more than a couple hundred yards but this should be considered the exception. You limit chances of success by not being able to walk/climb.

Top quality optics is a definite asset. (Guides are supplied with high power spotting scopes and binoculars.) Four permits are available each year. We prefer to conduct the hunts Sept1- 15 or Oct 1 -15. Other dates may be available on request.

2005 price: $20,000.00

+MOUNTAIN MOOSE

Mountain Moose hunts are conducted in zone 434. These hunts are conducted from Sept 24- Oct 30. These are calling season hunts with the prime rut time being Sept. 24 -Oct 20. Bulls average in the 50-60 inch category. Hunts are conducted from mountain camps or from the comfort of one of our rustic cabins. In either case expect to use horses for a lot of the time , however if you cannot ride we can do spot/stalk, tree stand/blind, walking, and even vehicle based hunts.

Rifle hunters to date enjoy 100% success. Bow hunters have had 100% opportunity. Typically you can expect to see moose nearly every day and some days several bulls. Every year at least one Boone & Crockett size bull has been located. Two permits are available.

2005 price: $6,500.00 Mule/whitetail deer make a not bad combo on this hunt and can be added for $2,500.00

+MOUNTAIN ELK

Hunts are conducted in zone 430. Dates are Sept. 17 - Nov. 30 . Elk populations are not extremely high but the numbers usually increase later in the season when they move out of the alpine regions. Bulls are of good size (in the 270 in. plus category). Six point or better bulls are legal. Hunts are done from tent camps using horses or on a large river using boats. One permit is available with the rut period of Sept. 17 - 30 being the most productive. Other dates can be effective as well especially late November when weather conditions make for some great opportunity.

2005 price $6,500.00

+MULE DEER

Hunts are conducted in zone 434. Populations are high with several bucks in the 20 in. range available. To click on the bigger bucks you will need to pass on several smaller deer. The season is from Sept. 17 - Nov. 30. You have the option of a pre rut high country hunt or the rut hunt that occurs in late Oct. - Nov. 30. The later hunt would likely be done from the cabins and could involve the use of horses, spot/stalk, still hunting, calling techniques.

Three permits are available. Hunts can be done 1x1 or 2x1. This hunt is very similar in style and quality to the sheep hunts. You are hunting the same areas as for sheep except you are looking foe deer indifferent spots. While hunting Mule Deer it is not unusual to see lots of sheep. Best times are after Oct 15 .

2005 price $3,500.00

+PARKLAND MOOSE /ELK

The parkland moose/elk hunts are conducted in zone 348 (west of Edmonton) during the month of November. These are excellent hunts that provide lots of sightings and excitement. The bulls are a bit smaller than the mountain variety but the large number of animals usually makes up for the difference. You can expect moose in the 40-50 inch. and elk in the 200-350 inch range. There are however some excellent examples of both moose and elk that are much larger. Hunting is done using horses, trucks/spot/stalk walking/still hunt, or drives.

Accommodations may be a home /cabin or tent camp depending on preferences/weather. The parkland area is a mixture of farm land and green zone. Timber type is predominantly aspen with patches of mixed coniferous/deciduous trees and shrub. this is a high success area that provides superior opportunity for beginners, groups, and physically challenged individuals. For the more experienced hunters it still presents plenty of challenges in topography, various hunting methods, size of animals etc. Two moose and one elk permit is available, this is an area where a moose/elk combo is very effective .

2005 price $4,500.00/10 day hunt. Combo hunt moose/elk $7,500.00

+WOLF/COYOTE

Wolf /coyote hunts are conducted during the winter months using calling, spot/stalk and still hunting methods. The hunt would probably be done from cabins using horses, spot/stalk, still hunting, calling, and tree stand methods. Four permits are available.
